“You should check it out when you have a chance.” the professional bassist slash accountant slash computer hobbiest and regular customer said as I was stocking the magazine shelves in the front of the store.
“I think it’s pretty cool. Yeah, it’s gonna be real popular.” I remember him saying. It was the early 1990’s and I was working in the computer department at London Drugs.
“Really. What was the name of it again?” I asked maintaining polite conversation.
“The Internet.”
And so is the way we are introduced to new technologies. I passed that one off as a “yeah whatever”, but began to see the internet quickly creep in to our lives and really began to take notice.
I remember that day like I remember the Challenger. I remember it because I was so wrong. I remember it because I shock myself thinking how closed-minded I was. Yes, I’m happy to report I am now more open-minded.
Technologies come and go with only a handful over the decades being truly disruptive. But, many can enhance our lives and our teaching so keep a much more open mind than I did back in the 90s. Try out a new app this week, it may disrupt your classroom in a positive way.
