My son introduced me to the Grok app. I’m not promoting it so I won’t add a link. You look it up if want. He showed me videos him and his friends made. They were completely innocent and fun but I felt a wave of nausea because I realized that in seconds a deep fake video can be made out of a picture.
Life, or reality, as I knew it disappeared. And the immediate question came to mind…why?!
Can you think of one benefit of deepfakes? And no, making mindless deepfake clips does not benefit society. It does not improve anyone’s quality of life.
How long is your list of problems it creates or has created? Deepfakes have been around for a long while but to make them for free and so effortlessly will…well I don’t want to consider what it will do.
I tried it with the only picture I had on my phone, me grilling beef. It took 30 seconds to create this video.
I would like you to ask yourself the why question when you use AI. Why am I using AI now? Is it because I’m too lazy to think for myself? Did I forget how to think critically? Why am I making this video? How will creating it improve anyone’s quality of life?
And it’s free. BUT, ChatGPT said it takes the equivalent energy of keeping a 60 watt light bulb on for 36 minutes (and 18 seconds for it to come up with that answer). Who pays for this energy and can’t the money be better spent? Our electricity rates are very high already so to provide for these deepfake videos will make electricity even more expensive.
We have enough problems, we don’t need Grok and appls like it to create a lot more problems without offering a hint of solutions to the plethora of problems already facing us.
Take a step back and think about the problems deepfake create with an absence of any benefit or solution to the many existing problems.
